Every actor has a different approach to his craft. Some can pull off mimicry, whereas others stick to method. For the latter, it’s very important to get into the headscape of the character, and live his story completely. Having said that, sometimes, actors don’t get to choose between the two. Some roles demand submitting and surrendering yourself to the story. Sports biopics are the best example. It’s impossible to project on celluloid the hard work, discipline and sacrifices that a sports person encounters in his journey, without having gone through it yourself.
That’s why a successful actor like Jamshad Cethirakath, who’s popularly referred to as Arya in the South India film industry, had to up his fitness game when he was approached to play a boxer in Pa. Rajnith’s upcoming sports drama, Sarpatta Parambarai. He had to fight his way up to perfection, much like the trajectory of the eponymous character, who had to fight his way out of his circumstances. The intention was different but the result is the same: A power-packed performance as its recently released trailer promises.
AskMen India shares all that Arya did to prepare for this role:
Boxing
Boxing not only demands immense body strength, but also a warrior’s mentality. Sarpatta Parambarai gave Arya the chance to step inside the boxing ring for the first time and learn the ABC’s of the sport. The actor shared numerous videos of him practising boxing drills and sparring his opponents during training sessions, where he would often be joined by his workout partner and wife, Sayyeshaa.
Running
Boxing is as much a cardio workout as it is a strength workout. This means that you need to have a kickass breathing capacity to survive inside the ring. For this, Arya incorporated long distance running into his training. He would also do shuttle runs and sprints to boost his stamina and endurance power. Running also helped him shed weight and look shredded in all the right places.
Cycling
Whenever running got monotonous, Arya would opt for cycling to get his daily dose of cardio. The actor is a huge cycling enthusiast and would be joined by a group of friends to pedal around town. His Instagram account features many pictures and videos from his cycling adventures, which happened every other day during the making of Sarpatta Parambarai, come rain or shine. It helped increase his stamina, speed and endurance.
Calisthenics
Having a strong core is key for a boxer. Arya built his by taking to calisthenics. This is a form of workout where you strengthen your muscles against the weight of your own body, as opposed to using dumbbells, barbells and other kinds of gym equipment. For his upper body, Arya would do ab roll outs using a foam roller. He also performed pull-ups to bolster his back.
Weightlifting
Boxers require superhuman strength to be able to take those hard-hitting punches back to back and for that, bodyweight training is not enough. Arya had to also lift heavy weights as part of his training for the role of Sarpatta Parambarai. He did everything from deadlifts and barbell squats to leg press and cable pullovers under the guidance of his gym trainer, to get the physique that he proudly flaunts in the trailer. It took blood, sweat and tears!
All the best to team Sarpatta Parambarai. Go pack a punch!
